How to Choose an Electric Pressure Washer for Car Detailing
A good electric pressure washer for car detailing is corded, in the 1,200 to 2,000 PSI class, and delivers at least about 1.2 GPM. Add a 25 or 40 degree nozzle, a hose and cord that reach around the car, and a quick-connect wand that takes a foam cannon.

Choosing an electric pressure washer for car detailing comes down to six checks: PSI, flow, reach, foam fit, size and warranty. Each one is easy to read off the box once you know what the numbers mean.
We compared the specs of four electric washers from three brands, and each one appears where it shows a point. If you want a wider field first, see Best Pressure Washers for Washing Cars at Home.
Quick answer: what to look for in an electric pressure washer for a car
Use this checklist before you read the details. Each item has its own section below.
- Power: an electric washer that runs on household AC power.
- PSI: a rated figure around 1,200 to 2,000 PSI.
- Flow: at least about 1.2 GPM.
- Reach: a hose and cord that reach around the car.
- Foam fit: a quick-connect wand that takes a foam cannon.
- Warranty and storage: a clear warranty, and a size and weight you can store.
A model that misses one item may still fit. One that misses several is probably the wrong washer for a car.
These are general starting figures that many car washers use, not a promise that any setting is safe for your paint. Follow both the washer maker's manual and the car maker's care guidance.
PSI and GPM: match the numbers to car washing
For car washing, aim for a rated PSI around 1,200 to 2,000 and a flow of at least about 1.2 GPM. PSI is the force of the spray, and GPM is how much water comes out each minute.
Both matter, because PSI sets how hard the spray hits and GPM sets how fast it carries the dirt away.
Electric pressure washer PSI: max versus rated
Max PSI is the peak figure a washer can reach, and rated PSI is the steadier number to compare. Some brands give both figures and others give only one, so check which one you are reading before you compare.
Westinghouse gives the ePX3500 a 2500 max PSI and a 2000 rated PSI, so its rated figure sits at the top edge of the range. More force is not always better on paint, so the paint check in Are Pressure Washers Safe for Car Paint? matters as much as the number you pick.
For the PSI numbers in more depth, read Best PSI for Washing a Car. If you only want washers in the 2000 PSI class, see Best 2000 PSI Electric Pressure Washers for Cars.
How GPM affects rinse time and water use
GPM sets how much water reaches the car each minute, so it drives rinse speed and water use. Multiply the GPM by the minutes you spray to estimate your water use, so 1.2 GPM for five minutes comes to about 6 gallons.
Pressure alone does not rinse a car. Flow carries the loosened dirt away, so a washer needs both numbers to rinse well.
The Chemical Guys PM2000 PRO gives 1.77 GPM, and both Westinghouse models give 1.76 GPM at max. Greenworks gives its 2100 PSI washer 1.2 GPM, which meets the flow floor in this guide.
Westinghouse measures its max flow at the lowest pressure, so compare rated figures with rated figures. On both the ePX3100v and the ePX3500, Westinghouse gives 1.2 GPM as the rated flow.
Corded, cordless or gas?
For home car washing, a plug-in electric washer is the simple choice, and it is the type this guide covers. All four picks run on household AC power, with no fuel to store.
Gas models add fuel and oil care to the routine, and a gas washer must never run indoors or in a closed garage. Follow the maker's manual either way, and see Electric vs Gas Pressure Washer for Washing a Car for a side-by-side look.
A cordless washer is a different buying decision, so judge it by the same PSI, GPM and reach rules. Cordless vs Corded Pressure Washer for Washing a Car compares the two, and Best Cordless Pressure Washers for Washing Your Car shows the options.
Motor type and power source
The motor matters less than the PSI and GPM it produces, so judge each washer by those numbers first. All four picks run on AC power, so their motors are electric rather than fuel-driven.
The PM2000 PRO has a 14.5-amp, 1680-watt motor, and Chemical Guys says it runs at a fraction of the noise of a gas washer. Greenworks says its 2100 PSI model has no gas, oil, spark plugs, air filters or pull cord, and starts with a push button.
Westinghouse says the pump on its models stops when the trigger is not engaged, to save energy and help the pump and motor last.
Hose, cord and reach
A hose and cord that reach around the car let you work from one spot. Look for a hose around 25 ft and a cord near 35 ft, since those lengths give room to walk around a car without moving the washer.
Measure from the washer's spot to the far side of the car, then add a few feet of walking room. That number tells you whether the hose is enough for your driveway or garage.
A longer hose gives more reach, but it is also more to coil after each wash, so buy the reach you need rather than the longest one.
The PM2000 PRO has a 25 ft flex hose and a 35 ft GFCI cord, and the ePX3500 has a 25 ft hose. The Greenworks 2100 PSI has a 35 ft power cord with a GFCI plug.
Check the exact hose length on whichever model you order, since reach is the spec you notice most. Follow the maker's manual for the cord and any power setup.
Nozzles and tips for car washing
Start on a 25 or 40 degree nozzle when you spray paint, and keep the narrow tips off the car. The 0 and 15 degree tips focus the spray into a small spot, so they belong away from painted panels.
Greenworks calls the 40 degree nozzle gentle cleaning and the 25 degree one general purpose. It names the turbo nozzle for heavy-duty cleaning, so keep that tip off paint too.
The ePX3500 wand has 0, 15 and 25 degree tips, a turbo tip and a soap applicator. Start on the 25 degree tip, and check the angles in the nozzle set of any model before you buy, since the tips change from one model to the next.
Foam cannon and soap compatibility
Look for a quick-connect wand that takes a foam cannon, and check what comes in the box for the exact model. Foam clings to the car longer than a plain spray does, which gives the soap time to loosen grime before a wash mitt touches the paint.
Westinghouse says the ePX3100v has a detachable foam cannon. Chemical Guys says the PM2000 PRO's universal connections take foam cannons, snubby guns and rapid-release fittings without adapters, and it suggests pairing the washer with its TORQ Professional Foam Cannon.
The Greenworks 2100 PSI has a 1/4 inch quick connect system and a soap applicator for adding detergent through the wand. For how cannon fittings work, see Foam Cannon Fittings: Quick Connect, Adapters, Orifice.
Foam depends on flow too, so the GPM floor in this guide matters for foam as well. Check the soap label for foam use, and pick a car wash soap that says it works in foam cannons or foam guns.
Use car wash soap as its label says, and never mix chemicals in the tank, the cannon or the washer.
For picking a cannon on its own, see How to Choose a Foam Cannon for Your Pressure Washer. To see washers that come ready for foam, read Best Pressure Washers With a Foam Cannon for Cars.
Paint safety with a higher-PSI washer
A higher PSI figure is not a reason to spray closer or use a narrow tip. The same washer can lift a chip when it is held close, while a wide setting from farther back is gentler on sound paint.
Keep a 25 or 40 degree tip on paint, step back from the panel and check each panel after a pass. Chipped, peeling or poorly repainted areas need a hand wash, whatever the washer's numbers say.
For wrapped cars, paint protection film, soft tops or engine bays, follow the maker's care guide or ask a pro.
Weight, storage and build
Pick a weight and size you can lift into a garage or onto a shelf, and measure your storage space before you order.
Westinghouse describes the ePX3100v as compact and lightweight, with a built-in carry handle. It measures 15 by 8.5 by 11 inches.
The ePX3500 weighs 19 pounds and stands 16.5 inches tall. Westinghouse says its four quick-lock wheels with 360 degree steering and low center of gravity are engineered to resist tipping.
The PM2000 PRO weighs 19.8 pounds and sits on 360 degree casters, which makes it easier to roll across a garage floor. Its onboard cable storage keeps the hose, cord, wand and tips together.
The Greenworks 2100 PSI weighs 22 pounds and stands 36.22 inches tall, so it needs the most vertical room. Its telescoping handle pulls out for transport and collapses for storage.
Both Westinghouse models come with a Pro-Style steel wand, which you hold for the whole wash, so check how it feels in your hand if you can. If space is tight, see Best Compact Electric Pressure Washers for Car Detailing.
Warranty and what is in the box
Three of the four picks carry a 3-year limited warranty. The PM2000 PRO has a 30-day warranty, which is far shorter, so read the terms before you buy.
A limited warranty covers defects for a set time, and it leaves out damage from misuse, so read the exclusions as well as the length. Write down the model number, such as ePX3100v or EQP411, so a warranty claim is easy to file.
Westinghouse backs the ePX3100v and ePX3500 with 3-year limited service, labor and parts coverage. Greenworks describes its warranty as covering defects in materials, parts or workmanship under normal use.
In the box, the ePX3100v and ePX3500 come with nozzle tips, a hose and a Pro-Style steel wand. The Greenworks 2100 PSI adds a spray gun, 25 degree, 40 degree and turbo nozzles, and a soap applicator.
Budget tiers in words
We left prices out of this guide, so the tiers below describe features, not cost.
- Budget: a washer that meets the PSI and GPM numbers, with a wand, a fan nozzle and a clear warranty.
- Mid-range: adds comfort features such as an onboard soap tank, wheels or a handle that helps with storage.
- Premium: adds the most convenience features and more power, though more PSI is not a better wash on paint.
The PM2000 PRO and the ePX3500 add wheels or casters, and the ePX3500 adds a soap tank. The ePX3100v and the Greenworks 2100 PSI rely on handles instead.
A simpler washer can still do the job if you add a foam cannon and keep the nozzle wide on paint. For washers that keep the cost down, see Best Budget Electric Pressure Washers for Washing a Car.
Final checks before you buy
Run through these checks on the exact model you plan to order. Write each answer down, so you can compare two models side by side.
- Confirm the rated PSI and GPM, not just the max figures.
- Measure the hose route from the water source to the far side of the car, then add room to walk.
- Check how the model handles foam: a detachable cannon, a soap tank or a fitting for a cannon you add.
- Measure the storage height, especially for the 36.22 inch Greenworks 2100 PSI.
- Read the warranty terms, including the 30-day coverage on the PM2000 PRO.
If a model fails one of these checks, move to the next pick in the buyer list instead of settling for a weak fit.
Pick an electric pressure washer for car detailing by buyer type
Pick the washer that matches how you wash, then check the PSI, GPM and reach numbers before you buy. Here is how the four picks fit different buyers.
- Compact with a cannon: Pick the Westinghouse ePX3100v if you want a compact build with a carry handle and a detachable foam cannon, backed by a 3-year warranty. Its full review goes deeper.
- Most flow: Pick the Chemical Guys PM2000 PRO if you want 1.77 GPM, casters and a 35 ft GFCI cord, and you are fine with a 30-day warranty. Read the PM2000 PRO review first.
- Fan tips in the box: Pick the Greenworks 2100 PSI if you want the 25 and 40 degree fan tips included, a telescoping handle for storage and a 3-year warranty.
- Soap tank: Pick the Westinghouse ePX3500 if you want an onboard 20 fluid ounce soap tank, anti-tip wheels and a 3-year warranty.
Start with the PSI and flow rules, since they decide the fit before any feature does. If two picks tie on those numbers, choose the one whose warranty, foam fit and storage size suit your setup better.

Frequently asked questions
What should I look for in a pressure washer for a car?
Look for a corded electric washer in roughly the 1,200 to 2,000 PSI class with at least about 1.2 GPM, plus a hose and cord that reach around the car. Check that the wand takes a foam cannon, start with a 25 or 40 degree nozzle, and read the warranty before you order.
Is an electric pressure washer good for car detailing?
Yes, for most home car washing, because an electric washer needs no fuel or oil to manage. Choose one in the right PSI and GPM range, keep a wide nozzle on the paint, and follow the maker's manual for power and setup.
How many GPM do you need for a foam cannon?
There is no single number, so check the foam cannon's own instructions for the flow it needs. This guide uses at least about 1.2 GPM as a floor for car washing, and all four picks meet it, with the Chemical Guys PM2000 PRO at 1.77 GPM.
Which brands make car-friendly pressure washers?
Westinghouse and Chemical Guys both name car washing for models in this guide, and Greenworks sends its 2100 PSI washer with 25 and 40 degree nozzles. Whatever the brand, check the model's PSI, GPM, reach and nozzles against this guide before you buy.
